Librarian I or Librarian II: $19.36 - $27.06

(Full-Time – Permanent)

These positions will focus on reference and adult services at the Central Library. Positon will not involve cataloging or archival collections.

 

DUTIES, FUNTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

 Librarian I

  1. Provides in-depth reference services and reader's advisory to the public.
  2. Compiles bibliographies, reference guides, and indexes.
  3. Prepares and presents programs in the community and the library.
  4. Purchases and maintains assigned portion of collection according to budgetary guidelines and assesses collection on a regular basis.
  5. Appraises, organizes, and processes specialized archival collections.
  6. Provides basic preservation of archival materials.
  7. Provides instruction and classes in the use of computer hardware and software. Initiates and maintains contact with schools and with other individuals and groups serving youth in the community.
  8. Initiates and maintains contact with schools and with other individuals and groups serving youth in the community.
  9. Provides library tours and orientations. Explains policies to public and staff.
  10. Compiles and prepares reports.
  11. Collects, maintains, and prepares reports.

 

Responsibilities - Supervision and/or Leadership Exercised:   None

Librarian II

  1. Assist staff and public with use of electronic information sources, software, internet and research databases.
  2. Provide assistance/instruction on use of library facilities and resources.
  3. Develops and evaluates collections of library materials and selects appropriate material for assigned collection.
  4. Acquires, maintains, and assesses assigned collection
  5. Generates reports and statistics on programming , funding and collection.
  6. Provides direct reference services to customers.
  7. Uses personal computer to perform a variety of circulation or collection-related duties.
  8. Compiles bibliographies and user guides. Performs original and edit cataloging.
  9. Resolves cataloging problems and maintains online public catalog.
  10. Appraises, organizes and processes special archival collections. Provides basic conservation of archival materials.
  11. Conducts meetings, training sessions and public programs.
  12. Schedules, coordinates and promotes library programming for assigned group.

Librarian I

    • Knowledge of public library issues and trends.
    • Knowledge of library automation and electronic resources.
    • Knowledge of reference tools and procedures.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.
    • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
    • Skill in using computers and related software, including Microsoft Office products.
    • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
    • Skill in planning and organizing.
    • Skill in working with and providing training and/or programming for youth.
    • Ability to stay current on library profession and services by attending classes and seminars.
    • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
    • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
    • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.

Librarian II

    • Knowledge of money handling and accounting practices.
    • Knowledge of books, electronic databases, internet resources, bibliographies and reference materials.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.
    • Skill in using computers and related software, including Microsoft Office products.
    • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
    • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
    • Skill in planning and organizing.
    • Skill in reviewing material to insure accuracy, completeness and adherence to established formats and procedures.
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with employees and the public.
    • Ability to stay current on archive issues and trends.
    • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
    • Ability to operate required vehicle safely.
    • Ability to read, understand and follow maps and mapping directions.
    • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICTIONS:

Librarian I

Master’s Degree from an ALA accredited Program, or must be received with six (6) months of employment

  • Licenses and Certifications Required: May require a valid operator’s license and the use of a personal vehicle.

Physical Requirements:

    • Must be able to stoop bend, walk, and reach heights of six (6) feet.
    • Must be able to lift or pull book bags and equipment up to fifty (50) pounds.
    • Must be able to push loaded book truck up to three hundred (300) pounds.
    • Must have manual dexterity to operate computer keyboard.

Librarian II

Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited university plus two (2) years’ experience as a professional librarian.

  • Licenses and Certifications Required: May require a valid operator’s license and the use of a personal vehicle.
    • If assigned to the APL Bookmobile, must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 30 days after hire.

Physical Requirements:

    • Must be able to stoop bend, walk, and reach heights of six (6) feet.
    • Must be able to lift or pull book bags and equipment up to fifty (50) pounds.
    • Must be able to push loaded book truck up to three hundred (300) pounds.
    • Must have manual dexterity to operate computer keyboard.
    • May be required to work in close/cramped quarters.
    • For Bookmobile positions: Must be able to drive the vehicle (i.e. use of hand and foot controls, etc.) for several hours a day.
    • For Bookmobile positon: Work may entail some exposure to outdoor temperature and weather conditions.
